Soqotra Island

Socotra also called Soqotra, is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. The name Socotra is derived from a Sanscrit name, meaning "The Island of Bliss". Archipelago Cokotra (Socotra) in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa can rightly be widely regarded as one of the strangest places on earth. The archipelago is unlike anything else and it seems that you were somewhere on another planet. It is believed that the archipelago has been isolated from mainland Africa, 6 - 7 million years, which affected its flora and fauna. It had long been a part of the 'Adan Governorate, but in 2004 it became attached to the Hadhramaut Governorate, which is in much greater proximity to the island than' Adan

The climate is harsh, hot and dry, and yet - the most amazing plant life thrives there. Situated in the Indian Ocean 250 km from Somalia and 340 km from Yemen, the wide sandy beaches rise to limestone plateaus full of caves (some 7 kilometers in length) and mountains up to 1525 meters high.

Imagine waking up on the Socotra Island and taking a good look around you (let's say your buddies pulled a prank on you and delivered you there, and lets also assume that you don't have any hangover from abuse of any substances). After a yelp of disbelief, you'd be inclined to think you were transported to another planet - or traveled to another era of Earth's history.

The second would be closer to the truth for this island, which is part of a group of four islands, has been geographically isolated from mainland Africa for the last six or seven million years. Like the Galapagos Islands, this island is teeming with 700 extremely rare species of flora and fauna, a full third of which are endemic, ie found nowhere else on Earth.

Alien-looking plants: HP Lovecraft's secret inspiration?
Was the famous Chtulhu myths creator aware of these forbidding mountains with their hauntingly weird flora (think of plant mutations from his "The Color out of Space")? We almost tempted to call Socotra the other "Mountains of Madness" - the trees and plants of this island were preserved thru the long geological isolation, some varieties being 20 million years old.

We begin with the dracena cinnibaris or Dragon's Blood Tree, the source of valuable resin for varnishes, dyes, and "cure-all" medicine; also (predictably) used in medieval ritual magic and alchemy. The branches spread out into the sky and from below appear to hover over the landscape like so many flying saucers, and from above they have a distinct mushroom look:

There is also the Desert Rose (adenium obesium) which looks like nothing so much as a blooming elephant leg.It also has a distinct personality and likes to smile for the camera.

Somewhat similar to the weird Dorstenia gigas, is this "bucha" vegetable, found as far north as Croatia. I hope it's not pregnant with anything malignant inside this sack. John Wyndham (with his "The Day of the Triffids") would've loved it.

Also found in Socotra's landscape is the ever-strange and extremely rare Cucumber Tree (dendrosicyos socotranum) - and yes, it's related to what's sitting in a pickle jar in your fridge.

The world's biggest eye to watch the sky

Coinciding with the celebration of its 50th anniversary, the European Southern Observatory(ESO) has launched the construction of the telescope optical / infrared world's largest. The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is a segmented mirror telescope 39.3 meters in diameter, located in Cerro Armazones (Chile), and will begin science operations early next decade. According to its proponents, will cover an area of sky about one tenth the size of the full Moon. Be four to five times larger than the current state of the art facilities of this type, bringing together about 15 times more light.

The piece the longer it takes to design and build complex adaptive mirror will be the M4, which will be about 2.5 meters in diameter, but a thickness of only 2 mm, allowing its deformation as if it were a flexible sheet . M4 is responsible for correcting both the effects produced by atmospheric turbulence as the wind on the telescope structure. Once installed, this extraordinary deformable mirror to the E-ELT will reach the theoretical maximum for resolution.

Thus, and E-ELT will become "the world's biggest eye to watch the sky" and address some of the greatest scientific challenges of our time, including tracking of planets like Earth around other stars in the "habitable zones" where life could exist. Also perform "stellar archeology" in nearby galaxies. It also used to investigate the nature of dark matter and dark energy.

ESO is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organization in Europe and the most productive astronomical observatory in the world. Fifteen countries support this institution: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Holland, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland. ESO is the European partner of another revolutionary astronomical telescope ALMA, the most ambitious astronomical project development.

The Electric Aircraft Future of the sky

Well think about Petrol, Diesel, Coal, Kerosene. What all of these have in common..? The answer is they all are getting too old and wont be alive much longer. So what's gonna give life to our Bikes, Cars, Trains, Aircrafts..? The Life Saver is Electricity!!
Lets Know About the Future of the Sky:

An electric plane could be significantly less expensive to operate than a conventional aircraft. A 200-mile electric-powered flight in a single-engine personal plane would consume about $20 of electricity, compared with about $80 worth of aviation-grade gasoline, and an electric motor has only one moving part, so it would be largely maintenance-free.
The EADS Group has benefited from the Paris Air Show to showcase its electric aircraft concept, dubbed VoltAir, which could emerge within a couple of years.

Use of batteries capable of storing a high density of electricity per kilogram, and motors made of materials with superconducting properties at high temperature, to decrease Power Consumption.

Superconductivity is a characteristic of some materials under certain conditions. They lose all electrical resistance, which allows a very economical operation.

Industrial uses are still very rare, because the phenomenon occurs only at very low temperatures. But researchers are on the trail of new materials that would remove this obstacle. EADS expects the hypothesis that "high-temperature superconducting motors" will reach a power density of 7-8 kW / kg with electrical losses near zero.
Regarding the batteries, the group relies on the maturity of technologies lithium-air and lithium-sulfur in the next 20 years. They could reach an energy storage density than 1000 Wh / kg, which would multiply the current performance by at least two.

Innovative Electrical Energy Generation

A new research in Leeds says that it can be possible now to capture Kinetic Energy that soldiers produce while marching and it can be converted to electrical energy.

This will help soldiers to reduce the weight of their bags up to 10 Kg. as they don't require to carry batteries anymore to charge their electronic equipments.

The cost of this project is around $1.64 million which will be funded by Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL).

An Exoplanet Made of Water

Forty light years from Earth is a huge planet made mostly of water and surrounded by a dense vapor atmosphere. The composition of this strange world of water has been analyzed by a team of researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian using the Hubble Space Telescope or NASA.

This water planet, called GJ1214b, was discovered in 2009 and is the first known with these characteristics. "It's unlike any planet known so far," says Zachory Berta, author of the paper, "much of their mass is made of water." In addition, scientists have explained that due to high pressures and temperatures, this exoplanent could form such exotic materials hot as ice or water superfluid.

Scientists have used the time when GJ1214b crossed in front of its star since the light thereof, to be filtered through the atmosphere, can reveal the composition of the gases which contain it. The results, published in The Astrophysical Journal, have confirmed that the thick fog that covers the fog exoplanet was not simple, but water vapour.

The diameter of this water planet is nearly three times that of the Earth , and seven times its mass. Astronomers have estimated that this super-Earth has a density of about 2 grams per cubic centimeter,
much lower than that of Earth, indicating that GJ1214b much more water and less rocks on our planet.

Heart Attacks Due to Drinking Cold Water

The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is very Harmful to have Cold Drink/Water during a meal. because, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this ‘sludge’ reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer . It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

French fries and Burgers are the biggest enemy of heart health. A coke after that gives more power to this demon. Avoid them for your Heart’s Health

Carrots used to be Purple

We All know the color of carrots. But did you know that Carrots used to be purple..? Yes it used to be. Before the 17th century, almost all carrots cultivated were purple.

The modern day orange carrot wasn’t cultivated until Dutch growers in the late 16th century took mutant strains of the purple carrot, including yellow and white carrots and gradually developed them into the sweet, plump, orange variety we have today.

Before this, pretty much all carrots were purple with mutated versions occasionally popping up including the yellow and white carrots. These however were rarely cultivated and lacked the purple pigment anthocyanin, which gave carrots back then their distinctive purple color.

It is thought that the modern day orange carrot was developed by crossing the mutated yellow and white rooted carrots as well as varieties of wild carrots, which are quite distinct from cultivated carrots.

Cloud Covered Island

Litla Dimun is a small island between the islands of Suouroy and Stora Dimun in the Faroe Islands. It is the smallest of the main 18 islands, being less than 100 hectares (250 acres) in area, and is the only one uninhabited. One of the most striking feature of this island is that it often remains covered in clouds. This type of cloud is known as Lenticular clouds, so called because it is shaped like a lens. Lenticular clouds are always stationary and when formed over mountain peaks or islands, like Litla Dimun, looks like a majestic hat.

A Biodegradable plastic from Garlic

The properties of garlic as a disinfectant and microbicide are well known. Now a company has decided to take advantage of grenadine to make a biodegradable plastic container that holds fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, this additive is incorporated in small capsules to avoid the odor problem.

"It is additive with properties antimicrobial and antifungal properties, ie, fight bacteria and molds that may occur in plants and cause diseases such as salmonella , "says project manager of the company Domca, Cristina Nunez. Researchers obtain these active principles through an organic extraction process from a paste made ??from garlic. To avoid the strong smell, additives are incorporated in small capsules that are inserted into the pores of the plastic layer in contact with the plant . "The plastic capsules begin to act progressively, from the time of packaging. In this way, we have greater control over the process of conservation, since the release is sustained over time. This increases the shelf life and therefore, its economic value, "said Nunez.

DNA used as a hard disk to store data

After three years of work and a total of 750 attempts, Jerome Bonnet and colleagues at Stanford University (USA) have succeeded in developing a system to encode, store and erase digital data in the genetic material of living cells. In practical terms, scientists have created the genetic equivalent of a "bit", the smallest unit of digital information that can be represented with two values, zero or one, off or on. In this case, we used DNA segments that are "worth zero if pointing in one direction and taken as a value in the opposite direction," the researchers say. Data can be read easily, since the sections of DNA have been previously modified to glow with green or red depending on their orientation. And since it is a non-volatile memory stores information without consuming energy.

Having the ability to program and store data into the DNA of cells promises to be a useful tool to study cancer, aging, development agency ... For example, the device would count how many times a cell divides, and well find out at what point they become cancerous.

LEFT BRAIN VS RIGHT BRAIN

Have you ever heard people say that they tend to be more of a right-brain or left-brain thinker?

Your right side of the brain controls the left side of your body.
Your left side of the brain controls the right side of you body.

Left brain function: number skills , written language , reasoning , spoken language , scientific skills, right side of body.

Right brain function: 3-D shapes, art awareness, imagination, music, left side of the body.

Amazing camouflage

The Satanic Leaf Tailed Gecko, is a species of gecko endemic to the island of Madagascar.Leaf-Tailed Geckos Are Basically Invisible!

Believe it or not, there is a lizard in the below picture:

The thing you can't see is a leaf-tailed gecko, a creature that has evolved to look like bark, leaves and twigs. It's so good at pretending to be other things that, most of the time, you can't even tell it's there when you're actively looking for it. At least, until it blinks. These Geckos are from the Island of Madagascar.
